Affogato Chocolate Mousse

When hosting a party or a get-together, people usually get stressed out thinking about what to serve. Aside from the main course, you also have to decide on the appetizers and desserts. Things do not have to be too complicated or elaborate, though. When it comes to desserts, there are plenty of recipes that can be made easily. And, no, they don’t have to involve cooking materials that are so confusing to use. You won’t have to worry about ingredients that are hard to find either.

The name may seem intimidating, but it is super easy to make that you can accomplish the task in just 15 minutes. Before we delve into the recipe itself, I would just like to briefly discuss what an “affogato” is. Put simply, affogato is an Italian coffee-based dessert. The term actually means “drowned”. So any treat like ice cream or vanilla gelato drowned in espresso could fall under the affogato category.

Affogato Chocolate Mousse

Description

This delicious Affogato Chocolate Mousse recipe is gluten-free. It is a perfect dessert for special gatherings.

Ingredients

100 ml good-quality espresso

300g ready-made fresh custard

150g dark chocolate (chopped)

3 large egg whites

1 tbsp light muscovado sugar

cocoa powder (for dusting)


Instructions

  1. Mix the espresso, chopped chocolate, and custard in a pan over low heat. Once the chocolate has melted, remove from heat and transfer the mixture into a bowl and let it cool off.
  2. Using a separate bowl, beat the egg whites and add a little bit of salt and sugar.
  3. Add about 1/3 of the beaten eggs into the custard mixture and gently fold in the rest of the egg whites.
  4. Divide the mixture between 6 ramekins or glasses. Shake gently to flatten the tops.
  5. Chill for about 4 hours and then dust with cocoa powder before serving.

Notes

For better results, chill the chocolate mousse overnight.

Since this dessert recipe requires chilling time, it is highly recommended that you make it ahead of time, preferably the day before the party to avoid time crunch. All you have to do before serving is to dust each with cocoa powder, which should only take a few minutes.
